My philosophy in treating all my clients is to focus on establishing a healthier relationship with food. Achieving healthier relationships with food is attainable through a combination of nutrition education and evidence based therapies utilizing my dual credentials in dietetics and professional counseling. I customize nutrition therapy for each individual utilizing my preferred cognitive behavioral therapy and mindful/conscious/intuitive eating modalities that focus on mental perception and awareness. This means I work on finding cognitive distortions in thinking and habits that influence eating behaviors. Cognitive distortions are held sacred for their guidelines for behavior to gain a sense of safety, control, and identity. I work on challenging these distortions in both an educational and empathic way to avoid unnecessary power struggles. I remind my clients that it is ultimately their choice but that their disordered eating self urges them to act on false, incorrect, or misleading information and faulty assumptions due to cognitive distortions. I have found that my clients establish weight-related behaviors due to a set of beliefs, attitudes, and assumptions about the meaning of eating and body weight. I challenge disordered attitudes and beliefs as to interrupt and eventually stop the disordered eating behaviors. This establishes optimal health with a health at every size approach.

In addition, I work with my clients to ensure they learn what adaptive functions or disordered eating behaviors they are using and work through them to help internalize the ability to attain and maintain recovery. I educate them that their disordered behaviors are used to express inner self struggles and that by working through their underlying issues and resolving them their disordered eating behaviors will decrease and a healthier self will arise.
